The ground was silent before the kick-off as Ros Purdham, the wife of former Haven player Garry Purdham, released 12 white doves in memory of her husband and the other 11 victims of the West Cumbria shootings.

Eagles’ hopes of reaching the Northern Rail Cup final slipped away on Batley Bulldog’s sloping pitch. A three-try burst in the final minutes of the first half proved too much to pull back in the final 40 minutes of quarter-final clash.

There was a minute’s silence before the kick-off in memory of the victims of the Whitehaven shootings, which included former rugby league player Garry Purdham.
